The United Nations World Tourism Organization has declared 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Travel & tourism have a huge – mostly indirect – impact on developing countries around the world.

In order to ensure sustainable growth, we have to gather data, analyse our industry and determine where we can do better.

The Sustainable Tourism Dashboard is divided into 7 themes: Poverty Alleviation, Equality of Travel, Carbon Emissions, Sustainable Production, Protected Areas, Gender Equity, and Security.

  • The share of direct employment from travel & tourism in developing countries has increased from 4.5% to 8.0%
  • The industry showed a 3% reduction in carbon emissions per guest night in 2014, having recorded 5.1% in 2013, 5.1% in 2012 and 3.1% in 2011
  • 49% of all employees in the travel & tourism industry are female
